Moving into a new home is a life-changing step for many. To help ease the stresses of moving, and prioritise tasks, we have put together a checklist that addresses ten key things that must be done for your new home to ensure that you can settle in comfortably in no time.

 

1. Get an Inspection

2. Update your Address

From important bills to package delivery, to facilitate the moving and renovation process, be sure to update your address. Head down to the nearest Neighbourhood Police Centre with the relevant documents, and all government agencies in Singapore will be notified of your new address, leaving you to personally update private services.

As soon as you have closed the deal and the home space is yours, change the locks on the doors– this is especially so if you have gotten an HDB resale flat in Singapore. Be sure that you and your family are the only ones with access to your new abode. If you are unable to change the locks just yet, padlocks work wonders as a temporary alternative.

 

 4. Check the Utilities

Be it a resale or BTO flat, in most cases, gas, water and electricity should already be available. However, be sure to either transfer or activate the appropriate utility companies before hiring a home renovation contractor in Singapore.

Whether your home security system is hooked up to the internet or you require Wi-Fi to make purchases online, establishing an internet connection a few weeks before moving in is a must on every checklist for new homes.

7. Inspect Home Remodelling Thoroughly

Very rarely will you ever find yourself in a situation where no changes, repairs, or improvements are to be made to a newly renovated home. Inspect every room for any signs of damage and point out flaws to your contractor so that they can rectify their mistakes immediately – saving you time and money down the road.

 

8. Pack and Move your Belongings

Make a checklist of things that needs to be moved from your previous accommodation. Hire the services of movers for bulky items and garner the help of family and friends for smaller ones. After the movers have made the shift, be sure to check that there are no missing boxes.

Purchasing new furniture is exciting, but be sure to take measurements and liaise with your contractors or interior designers before making any big purchases. Prepare a furniture quality control checklist and hold onto receipts and warranties after your purchase should you spot any defects later in the future.

 

10. Unpack

Finally, with the move on its last legs, all you must do is to unpack. Unpacking everything in one day will be a tough feat, so start with what you will inevitably need during the first 24 hours upon moving in. As you get acclimatised to your humble abode, unpack room by room and savour every moment of putting the final touches.
